More Purchasing Power for Private Schools

HB 2000 is a bill that passed the House and the Senate easily in the 84th legislature.  This bill allows private schools to use the Department of Information Resources to assist with all IT purchases.  Private K-12 schools can now take advantage of the contracts negotiated by the state to purchase hardware, software, and services.

The contracts are negotiated on a quantity of one, so large purchases are not required.  Private schools can feel comfort with the terms and conditions already negotiated by state experts, and reduce risk in purchasing.  There is a great website with a lot of helpful information about how to order.  As always, please contact our office with any questions at [email protected]  We have contacts in the department ready to help us use this valuable service!

Epi Pen Law Change

Senate bill 66 was signed into law on May 28, 2015 by Gov. Abbott allowing Texas public schools to stock epinephrine auto-injectors for school personnel to use on any student who suffers an anaphylactic reaction at school or at an after school event. The bill also includes appropriate liability protections for physicians, those involved in training, and health care workers or other providers involved in the administration of the auto-injectors.

While the bill does not specifically address private schools, schools may want to discuss updating their epi-pen policy with their medical team, board, and/or attorneys. The Texas Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society assisted in writing and lobbying on behalf of SB 66, and they have free training for school nurses and other personnel who may be involved in treating allergic students.  More information can be found at the Allergy Home website or by contacting [email protected] or [email protected]
