ESSA Passes Congress - What Does that Mean for Private Schools?

The Council for American Private Education worked hard to incorporate measures favorable for private schools into the revision of No Child Left Behind that is now called the Every Student Succeeds Act.

The new law, signed by the President on December 10th, clarifies the delivery of equitable services to private school students, establishes a flexible grant program, and allocates funds for preschool programs that "maximize parental choice."  For more information about the ESSA, read the CAPE newsletter about the details as they relate to private schools.

There will be a rally at the Capitol on Friday, January 29 but if your school cannot make it to Austin, this event kit is a great way to ensure you don't miss out on the fun! Each year the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission runs a video contest open to all Texas students in grades 6-12.  Submitted videos must be one to two-and-a-half minutes long and focus on a theme.  All entries due by February 15, 2016.

This year, students must submit a video styled as a news report on a genocide.  Winners will receive scholarship awards and are invited to join the Commission to receive recognition at a state meeting.  For further details, download the video contest flyer and guidelines.

Take Care of Texas and Samsung Austin Semiconductor invite K-5 students to submit their artwork showing how they help keep the air and water clean, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste. One grand prize winner will receive a Samsung laptop, and 15 students will win a Samsung tablet. The teacher of the student who designs the overall best artwork will also be awarded a Samsung tablet. The contest begins January 4, 2016; entries must be postmarked on or before March 2, 2016.

TPSA, Legislators Visit Arizona for School Choice Research

Thank you to the Friedman Foundation for sponsoring a fact-finding trip to Arizona to see how school choice programs have impacted private schools in that state. There was a lot to consider as we think about legislation for the 2017 session in Texas.

Senator Lucio (D-Brownsville), Senator Taylor (R-Friendswood), and Representative Flynn (R-Van) learn more about school choice programs in Catholic schools in Arizona.

Legislators had a lot of questions about how these programs affect students and families.

Senator Taylor and the group was impressed by a private school for blind children whose graduates go on to do amazing things like climb mountains!

The Effects of Schooling on Anti-Semitism

Many Jewish groups oppose school choice on the assertion that American public schools promote diversity and tolerance, whereas private — especially religious — schools may not do that as effectively. University of Arkansas professor Jay P. Greene finds that with anti-Semitism, the opposite may be the case.

In his new report, he administers the Anti-Defamation League’s anti-Semitism index to a large, representative sample of US adults and finds that having attended a private school as a child is associated with significantly more favorable attitudes toward Jews, on average, than having attended public school.
