Representative Bohac Working to Help Families Access Private Schools

Representative Dwayne Bohac has become our champion for a Tax Credit Scholarship bill (HB 1043).  Not only did he file the bill, but he is working hard every single day to explain to other members of the House of Representatives what this bill is, and what it isn't.

"This bill allows corporations who have a franchise tax liability to make a contribution to a certified non-profit scholarship granting organization that helps the working poor escape schools that do not serve their needs.  It is a tax credit bill in the same manner that a corporation taking a tax deduction for making a contribution to the symphony is a tax credit.  This is another tool to help improve education in Texas.  It is all about access to schools that serve children's needs.  Families know which schools will fit the needs of their children better than anyone, and this allows them to have access to those schools."

Thank you Representative Giovanni Capriglione and Senator Brandon Creighton for Filing HB 1881/SB 1596 To Allow Schools to Pass Along Credit Card Fees to Parents Who Want This Option for Tuition Payments

 Senator Brandon Creighton (pictured left) and Representative Giovanni Capriglione (right) listened to their constituents who really wanted to be able to pay private school tuition but were not allowed to do so because Texas legislation required that the schools absorb the fees in the budget rather than pass them along to parents who wanted the option of paying this way.  The result is HB 1881/SB 1596 to allow schools to pass these fees to parents who want this convenience.

CONTACT YOUR SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE TO LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU SUPPORT THIS BILL.  IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO REPRESENTS YOU IN AUSTIN, GO HERE TO FIND OUT!

FREE Help for Private School Safety Improvements:

1. The Texas School Safety Center in San Marcos is providing FREE workshops designed to help schools refine and develop high-quality emergency management plans and processes.  More detailed information can be found here:
http://txssc.txstate.edu/events/eop-workshops/

2. Software for Developing School Emergency Operations Plans from the Department of Education

The Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center recently released a free, web-accessible software application EOP ASSIST to help school administrators, including those in private schools, and emergency management personnel create or revise their Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs).

This user-friendly application walks school and district emergency management personnel through the six-step planning process for creating a customized school EOP recommended in the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans.

What Can the EOP Software Do?

  • Facilitate collaboration among school planning team members;
  • Compile management information in a single location;
  • Access relevant resources to support each stage of the planning process;
  • Generate a comprehensive school EOP based on the Federal guidance and recommendations;  Revise the EOP to address changes in state, local, or district policies and/or other factors;
  • Export and edit the plan for inclusion in school-level and district-level emergency management manuals; and
  • Schedule EOP reviews or meetings, and set deadlines for submitting EOPs.
